“I Feel Behind” — According to Who?

ON SCHOOL & WORK

My friend Treasure and I moved abroad when we were pretty young (like a lot of Nigerians do). We ended up on different continents, studying totally different things, but somehow we both faced the same question: how do you actually build a career or restart your education from scratch in a place that isn’t home?

Over the years, we’ve both caught ourselves comparing our paths to everyone around us; university classmates, local friends, even our past selves. What we didn’t realize at first was that we were all on totally different journeys, and most of the people we compared ourselves to probably felt the same way. Turns out, a lot of our friends have this dilemma too, which is why we wanted to talk about it together.

In this episode, we chat about how we’ve navigated these challenges and what’s helped us so far in our careers and studies. We also get into what it’s really like to start over in a new country, the costs and upsides of ambition, the goals we quietly measure ourselves against, and the little disappointments that come with making big decisions that don’t always work out. We ask ourselves what it really means to feel “behind” and if that feeling is even real. We don’t have all the answers, we are just two friends sharing what we’ve learned and what we’re still figuring out.

If you’ve ever caught yourself comparing your journey to someone else’s or wondered if you’re supposed to be somewhere else in life, this episode is for you.
